Howard County Maryland: Columbia Town Center

Blakefield has expertise developing shared visions between local governments and developers to build places that enhance the competitiveness and attractiveness of their jurisdictions. A partnership model founded on a common need for sustainable, effective growth helps keep local governments goals pragmatic and acknowledges their reliance upon private industry in achieving them.

When Thomas D’Alesandro launched the initiative to refresh Columbia Town Center, he first spent time listening to the community to understand their priorities. Then he assembled an extraordinarily capable team that engaged the public as it shaped an updated vision of our downtown. Tom understood the potential value to his company of increased development in the Town Center, but it was his recognition of the connections between economic and social value creation that won my support for the zoning application.

As part of General Growth’s effort to map out a strategy for future development in  Columbia’s town center, D’Alesandro turned to some of the leading thinkers in the fields of planning and design. He has made a promising start by assembling such a strong team of experts and offering a vision for giving Columbia a long overdue shot of urbanity.
